Alternative Feeds for Beef Cattle
نویسنده
چکیده
As a beef cattle nutritionist, two things have been drilled into to me from early on: 1) the cheapest way to feed the cow is to let her “harvest” her own feed by grazing, and 2) corn is the cheapest source of energy for fed cattle. However, fluctuations in corn and land prices in more recent years have raised questions regarding the truth in these old adages. The objectives of these proceeding are to explore the historic feeding strategies for cattle, discussing their benefits and limitations, and provide information on alternative feeds for beef cattle producers to take advantage of.

40 percent of annual production costs in typical cow/calf operations. These costs also have a dramatic impact on cost per unit of gain in stocker operations. Consequently, cattle producers must continually evaluate new methods to make efficient use of available resources while optimizing animal performance and minimizing supplementation costs. Often, when cattle graze marginal to low quality fo...

Feed is the largest single cost of producing beef. Producers who have access to alternative feeds often have economic advantages due to the lower costs of production. However, alternative feeds can present challenges due to variable consistency, variable supply, potential toxicants, and unusual composition. Rice straw, a by-product of the rice grain industry in Northern California, is a potenti...

Nutritional disorders associated with both forage and feed consump tion can have a large impact on the profitability of beef cattle operations. Forages are an important component of beef cattle production systems in Arkansas. Most cowcalf and stocker cattle enterprises in Arkansas rely heavily on foragebased nutritional programs. Forages are used for both livestock grazing and hay production...
متن کاملUpgrading plant amino acids through cattle to improve the nutritional value for humans: effects of different production systems.
Efficiency in animal protein production can be defined in different ways, for example the amount of human-digestible essential amino acids (HDEAA) in the feed ration relative to the amount of HDEAA in the animal products. Cattle production systems are characterised by great diversity and a wide variety of feeds and feed ration compositions, due to ruminants' ability to digest fibrous materials ...

Shane Gadberry, Ph.D. Associate Professor Animal Science Feeding supplemental protein or energy to beef cattle consuming a foragebased diet should be viewed as an investment in cattle health and performance. Considering the large selection of supplemental feeds avail able, selecting the right feed is a daunting task. As an investment, supplemental feed is necessary to complement the forag...
